The Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum seeks a dynamic and forward-thinking Director of Education who will provide long and short-range planning for all exhibition-related and museum-related programs including those for students, educators, families, children, scholars, and the general public. With the opening of its world-class museum, designed by Pritzker Prize winning architect Zaha Hadid in Spring, 2012, Michigan State will emerge as one of a handful of University museums devoted to international contemporary art.

The Director of Education will join an energetic and professional group led by the Founding Director, developing and implementing educational programs for the Broad Art Museum. He/she will be a creative thinker who can foster new ways of thinking about museum education. This is an extraordinary opportunity to be a key player in the creation of a new museum of contemporary art. The Broad Art Museum/MSU is unique among contemporary museums in that it possesses an historical collection dating back to Greek and Roman art. The museum's exhibition program will actively engage dialogues across the centuries with the benefit of this historical collection.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

* Pursue and develop relationships with university faculty and administrators across a range of disciplines to co-create collaborative programs with the Museum;
* Develop, plan, and implement educational programs for diverse audiences, including children, educators, community groups, the public and those with disabilities and/or special needs;
* Work in close collaboration with the Curator to develop tours and educational programs around the exhibitions and permanent collection;
* Work with Museum staff to develop new venues and formats for interchange, programs for various audiences, and educational publications including: books, guides, videos and/or software, and international conferences/seminars for teachers, Broad Art Museum Web educational materials.
* Develop detailed budgets and forecasts for educational programs;
* Work closely and cooperatively with private and state school systems in scheduling tours and programs and ensure that all school-targeted programs will reinforce MSU's curriculum standards;
* Engage in outreach activities that will further the breadth and scope of the Museum;
* Provide management, supervision to all educational programming, as well as on-going training to educational staff, museum docents, interns and volunteers;
* Foster curricular engagement with the Museum's collections, exhibitions, programs and initiatives, associated research materials, and staff resources;
* Act as a conduit between faculty and museum staff to facilitate the development of museum programs and exhibitions within the galleries that support the research and teaching mission of the university;
* Regularly attend and participate in relevant meetings, symposia, workshops, and other forums of brainstorming, information exchange and logistical planning within the Museum and across the university;
* Maintains a global perspective on the university's teaching, learning and research resources; and acts as an ambassador for the Museum at various venues.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Work Experience: Minimum, MA; PhD preferred; at least five years' museum experience. Broad knowledge of art history and how the contemporary can be contextualized in the larger scope of world art history are strongly desired.

Skills and Abilities: Applicants must possess the ability to generate and implement educational programs with a local, national and international reach. The Director of Education will have demonstrably strong connections to museum educator peers, and other institutional connections across the U.S. and internationally. The Director of Education must be eager to fully explore and work within a university environment, making connections between art and a very extensive pool of academic disciplines. At the same time, the Director of Education needs to be an outgoing member of the local community, willing and able to make strong connections with the museum's local neighbors and visitors. Ability to work varied hours including evenings and/or weekends depending on program needs.

The Director of Education will be a consummate professional and team player. Ideally, the Director of Education will be able to dream big dreams while being fully grounded in the day to day life and work of the museum.
