Vice President of Programs

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is seeking a Vice President of Programs. Reporting to the President, the Vice President of Programs is responsible for strategic direction and performance of the programs and activities that deliver engaging science learning experiences and support community needs and OMSI's strategic goals. The Vice President is a spokesperson for OMSI in the community and a strategist for positioning OMSI effectively as a respected leader in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. The Vice President is a collaborative member of the Senior Leadership Team, manages a staff of 30 FTE, 40 seasonal and a budget of $3M.

The Vice President of Programs works in a highly creative, collaborative, team environment with a strong sense of mission. They must be able to think strategically, work effectively with complex and challenging issues and ideas, and at the same time be organized and appreciate the importance of support systems and attention to operational details. The ideal candidate must value and be able to articulate the organization’s mission and speak of it with authentic passion. As a good listener, the Vice President is able to synthesize ideas, seek alignment with the organization’s goals and move from idea to action.

The Vice President must be able to supervise and participate in the development of OMSI’s educational programs, including but not limited to: camps and classes, field trips, camp-ins, professional development, outdoor school and traveling programs. They must provide strategic business direction for educational activities to achieve goals for mission, impact and net revenue. The Vice President will integrate the work of the program areas responsible for educational activities and guest experience, in collaboration with Exhibits and Marketing, to advance strategic goals and brand. They will guide development and management of cross-functional business plans and budgets to meet objectives while developing strategic partnerships and collaborations with community stakeholders. The Vice President must be able to manage performance of educational activities using assessment metrics to meet goals for educational impact, environmental impact and financial strength.

A Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of experience and education is required. The ideal candidate will have a minimum 8 years of progressive program management, including staff supervision, multiple project management and budget responsibility. A Minimum 5 years of leadership experience in strategic business management at an executive level, preferably in a non-profit or learning organization. A minimum 8 years of experience in delivering engaging educational experiences, preferably in a visitor attraction or related informal learning environment.
