Deputy Director, Curatorial & Collections Management
The Qatar Museums Authority unites and focuses the efforts of all museums in the State of Qatar for the acquisition, preservation, and interpretation of collections and monuments held in trust for the Qatari people, and shared with the world at large. The Qatar Museums Authority provides the leadership and accountability necessary for the development of a strong and growing system of 21st century national museums, and an effective system for protecting, preserving and interpreting historic sites and monuments. The new National Museum of Qatar (MoQ), currently under development, will represent the history, heritage, and culture of Qatar, enhancing understanding through exhibitions, education, cultural site visits, and technology-based programming for the nation, the region and the world. The institutional vision is realized by: • Presenting the highest quality visitor experiences through exhibitions and programs. • Collecting, preserving and conserving the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of Qatar. • Enabling and supporting collections-based and other research topics of importance, to broaden the scope and knowledge of Qatar’s cultural heritage. • Developing and offering educational programming, publications, films, and online learning opportunities that inspires visitors to further explore and study in Qatar. • Facilitating visitor travel to important cultural sites throughout Qatar while promoting sustainable cultural tourism. JOB TITLE: DEPUTY DIRECTOR, CURATORIAL & COLLECTIONS MANAGEMENT AREA/DEPARTMENT: NATIONAL MUSEUM of QATAR (NMoQ) LOCATION: Doha, Qatar RESPONSIBLE TO: DIRECTOR, NATIONAL MUSEUM of QATAR (NMoQ) RESPONSIBLE FOR: CURATORIAL, CONSERVATION, COLLECTIONS & LIBRARY STAFF POSITION DESCRIPTION As one of four institutional deputies, the Deputy Director, Curatorial & Collections Management (DD-CCM), is an intellectual and technical authority who can assume the full range of curatorial and collections management responsibilities for the National Museum. The DD-CCM will direct and oversee the physical management, storage, and conservation of object, archival, and library collections, and will set policy and procedure in all areas of collections management. The DD-CCM will set and implement the institutional acquisition and research agenda with a general and object-specific focus, resulting in publications that are accessible to scholars and visitors. The DD-CCM will collaborate/consult in the creation of permanent and temporary exhibitions, and the creation of public programming, and joint venture research projects and exhibitions. The Deputy Director for Curatorial and Collections will also supervise the Associate Deputy Director for Curatorial and the Associate Deputy Director for Collections; other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS • Master’s Degree (required), PhD preferred, in anthropology, ethnography, archaeology, history, museum studies, or closely related field. • Extensive and progressively responsible curatorial experience; demonstrated record of original scholarship and achievement. • Extensive knowledge of professional museum principles, practices, and procedures in collections management. • Expertise or research interest in one or more of the NMoQ’s collections: intangible heritage/oral history, natural history, archaeology, textiles, jewelry, maritime history. • Knowledge of the current market, collecting ethics, and current customs regulations in NMoQ’s areas of specialization preferable. • Proven ability in management and administration. • Excellent written, communication and presentation skills. • Proficiency in database software (Filemaker Pro, KeEmu) and museum cataloging standards. • Proficiency in full range of office suites and imaging/design software. • Basic understanding of Arabic helpful. OTHER REQUIREMENTS • Flexibility of working hours required to meet deadlines. • Successful candidate must demonstrate ability re cultural, religious, race, gender, and age sensitivities and adaptabilities. • Successful candidate will possess a sense of adventure and flexibility.
