The Exploratorium is a not-for-profit museum dedicated to the public understanding of science, art, and human perception. It has pioneered the role of museums as active teaching centers with original programming based on an interactive approach to learning. It serves as an interdisciplinary resource for schools, universities, scientists, and artists, as well as for the public. SUMMARY Based in the office of the Executive Associate Director, the Program Grant Writer works with program leadership and staff, as well as Exploratorium development staff, to secure support from government agencies, corporations, and foundations. This position requires a seasoned grant writer. The position’s primary responsibility is to write proposals for Exploratorium programs including exhibitions, Web projects, and educational projects. In addition, the writer works with schools and other educational organizations. The complex and creative culture of the Exploratorium, which spans academic disciplines, traditions, media, and audiences, requires the Program Grant Writer to articulate cross-cutting initiatives coherently to address funding needs and opportunities. The position requires knowledge of science and science education, how it is funded in a nonprofit institution, and knowledge of the grant-making environment. Demonstrated success in writing proposals to sophisticated funding organizations such as the National Science Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Endowment for the Arts, California Department of Education, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Carnegie Corporation, and others is required. The position will partner with program staff to develop and articulate major funding initiatives and will work with the Exploratorium Development office to manage proposal submission. We are looking for a passionate, articulate individual committed to the mission of the Exploratorium and excited by the opportunity to make an impact on science education worldwide. The Program Grant Writer reports to the Associate Director of Program. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Be thoroughly committed to the Exploratorium’s mission and programs • Take the lead on writing, developing, and proofreading grant proposals for major initiatives (~4-8 per year) for federal, private, and corporate funders • Intermittently take the lead on smaller, specialized proposals of particular concern to the program staff. • Develop and maintain current knowledge of informal and formal science education research and practice and of trends in the funding community • In coordination with the Development Department, design, and manage the grant application process • Maintain program proposal and reporting calendar, working with program leaders to submit grant reports and other required materials on time • Participate in program development meetings as needed MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS • BA/BS degree and 5 years of experience as a lead grant writer, preferably in a complex, multifaceted, nonprofit educational environment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience • Demonstrated success as the lead grant writer securing grants from sophisticated funding agencies such as the National Science Foundation, MacArthur, Moore, Noyce, Gates, and others. • Demonstrated track record of handling a variety of constituencies, managing multiple tasks simultaneously, and thriving in a complex environment with multiple priorities • Strong written and verbal communication skills All candidates will be required to submit a list of successful grant-writing efforts and the agencies that made the awards, as well as to submit two sample grant proposals.
