The Exploratorium is a not-for-profit museum dedicated to the public understanding of science, art, and human perception. It has pioneered the role of museums as active teaching centers with original programming based on an interactive approach to learning. It serves as an interdisciplinary resource for schools, universities, scientists, and artists, as well as for the public. SUMMARY This is primarily a graphics position with layout and production responsibilities. The position reports to the Art Director for the Design Department. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Act as production artist, producing graphic layouts for publications, brochures, cards, exhibit labels, etc... for a team of designers • Review work for accuracy with a demanding eye, ensuring overall design and quality standards are met • Prepare digital ready-to-print files for a variety of printing technologies, (i.e. traditional offset printing, silk screen, and digital printing) • Produce PDF format proofs for approval and prepare spreadsheets outlining graphic specs for printers • Typeset graphic materials on Macintosh environment • Operate inkjet wide format printers, laminators, etc. " load media, replace inks, basic printer operation skills • Communicate with designers and printers/vendors • Handle all related billing duties • Additional duties as needed MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS • BA in art or related field • 3-5 years’ experience in the production of graphic materials for offset printing and digital printing processes • Thorough knowledge of the prepress, print and graphic design process • Dedication to accuracy and detail • Great organizational skills • Excellent communication skills, highly motivated and energetic • Highly proficient in Adobe CS Adobe CS5 (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word and Excel (SketchUp skills a plus) • Understanding of color and how to adjust via the tools for best matching output • Ability to meet tight deadlines and unexpected changes • Ability to juggle multiple projects • Interest and/or background in the arts and/or sciences • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time Senior Graphic Production Artist APPLICATION DEADLINE The application submission deadline expires on Friday, December 30, 2011 by 4:00pm or when the position is filled.
