Art Project Director

SUMMARY
The responsibilities of the Exhibits Environment Art Project Director will fall into two major categories: they will function as the project director for a selection of special projects and also participate at a senior level in museum wide-arts activities. The Exhibit Environment Group encompasses the creative programs for the museum floor for the public’s interaction and exploration. In the role of Project Director they will be responsible for a variety of special projects including overall organization, intellectual leadership, and implementation of these projects. Their first major project will be spearheading a National Science Foundation funded arts/science conference in collaboration with the Exploratorium’s Group Six (G6) department. G6 develops experimental and interdisciplinary programs that involve partnerships with a wide array of other institutions, fields and disciplines and serves as a professional development for educators. We assume that the candidate will have the initiative and creative spark needed to create innovative projects that will further the institutional goals of the arts at the Exploratorium. As arts senior staff they will also work collectively with art staff to create a workable scenario that will address structural, financial, and strategic issues. This includes funding strategies for building a viable and vital support staff. The EE Arts Project Director contributes to program and strategic planning efforts, and works collaboratively with staff from other program areas. The position requires someone who has deep experience in a non-profit arts organization and who is comfortable working in a highly collaborative environment with creative staff. The position reports to the EE Senior Artist.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Direct special projects within the EE arts department and Group 6. This includes the planning and implementation of the arts/science conference and other potential projects within the scope of the EE Arts Department. These undertakings could include other NSF funded projects, exhibitions, special programs, panels, etc.
• Initiate intriguing, thought provoking projects and be able to articulate and help identify funding for those ideas
• Contribute to the over-all intellectual leadership of the Exploratorium’s art program
• Partner with senior art staff to create a structure and strategies that encourages a creative and positive environment for doing the best work possible
• Facilitate communication and coordination between arts groups and other interested shareholders
• Work closely with EE senior artist, Department Directors and Managers to coordinate and improve the day-to-day administrative operations of EE arts, its programs and projects
• Direct preparation and administration of a $250,000+ annual budget, including ongoing financial projections and regular forecasts. Oversee a budget planning and management process that facilitates the appropriate involvement of EE arts staff and meets institutional needs and requirements
• Manage the fiscal and administrative portion of grant-funded projects, sub-awards and contracts
• Lead the effort to implement and monitor ongoing system and process improvements in EE arts administrative activities addressing workload, feedback and other identified issues
• Improve existing funding strategies and build arts staffing capacity

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
•Ability to envision, plan, and carry out large scale projects with multiple shareholders
• Outstanding organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Demonstrated experience to work with staff at all levels in a highly complex, collaborative, environment; commitment and ability to promote and sustain positive workplace values and relationships
• Minimum three (3) years progressively responsible experience in arts non-profit organization in a position of leadership and supervision
• At least 3 years of experience in running a small arts organization, an arts department in a larger organization or the equivalent
• MA/MFA preferred. BS degree a plus or a combination of higher education and work experience
• At least 3 years of experience in running a small arts organization, an arts department in a larger organization or the equivalent
• Experience in installing public artwork
• Demonstrated experience with the financial management of organizational budgets. Comfortable with systems, structures, and tools for financial and administrative analysis
• Demonstrated ability to think and plan at a broad-based strategic level
• Proven ability to prioritize and balance multiple demands in a fast-paced, creative environment; highly organized and detail oriented
• Has a deep understanding of what it takes to produce and install artworks and will do what it takes.
• Computer savvy with expertise in Excel, Word, and database programs; experience with web-based applications highly desirable
• Ability to move from place to place, use a telephone and computer terminal, lift and carry up to 25 pounds short distances
