Profile:
Goodwood Museum & Gardens is recognized as an historic landmark that is part of the heritage of Florida. Goodwood is a private 501(c)3 organization created to restore the historic Goodwood estate as a museum and garden open to the public.
The estate began in the 1830s as a cotton plantation that ultimately covered over 8,000 acres. There are 12 structures on the property dating from ca. 1835 to 1925. The plantation's agricultural emphasis declined after the Civil War and by the 1880s the remaining 160 acres; house, outer buildings and gardens served as an elegant private residence. In 1911, Goodwood's ownership changed and the house and gardens underwent major renovation, securing a place among the fine homes of the Country Estate era. Goodwood's owners further enhanced the estate's style and elegance in the late 1920's. The restoration efforts focus on this era. The overall collection quality is outstanding with over 95% of the items seen in the house original to the owners of the property from the period of interpretation.
