Multimedia Specialist
The Multimedia Specialist position is part of the Web Development team in the Online Engagement Group at the Exploratorium. This role is responsible for design and development of new projects and on-going support for the Exploratorium’s web site. Responsibilities include designing and developing educational web resources and web content. The candidate should have strong visual and concept design abilities, advanced web content development skills, and demonstrated proficiency with common web page markup languages. This position reports directly to the Online Production Manager of Online Engagement Group. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Conceptualize, research, design, and develop material on a variety of science/humanities topics • Design and develop highly accessible online multimedia/media exhibits and resources • Perform general web site maintenance • Develop creative solutions to address complex communication and information design challenges of online media • Experiment with the temporal and spatial properties of interactive exhibit and resource design. • Work collaboratively with scientists, educators, artists, technologists, exhibit designers, media professionals, project managers, and Directors on team-based projects • Manage assigned projects, meet deadlines, and participate in department and project team meetings • Document project processes and results with written reports, site maps, project web sites, media and project asset backup sets, and other documentation tools • Share knowledge of online/emerging media with colleagues • Additional duties as needed MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS • Bachelor’s Degree in conceptual design, interactive multimedia, user interface design, visual arts, or other related field, or equivalent experience • Minimum 4 years experience developing web content, preferably in a museum or informal education environment • Demonstrated proficiency with life cycle web development processes including analysis, design, prototyping, debugging, testing, and support • Professional-level design aesthetic in multimedia work • Demonstrated proficiency developing web content including web pages and interactives with HTML/XHTML, CSS, and Flash interactivity/animation • Experience designing web pages for dynamic page publishing systems. • Advanced digital image design and manipulation ability using Photoshop or similar image manipulation software • Experience encoding and publishing audio and video files • Excellent knowledge of web browsers and developing content for delivery on different computer platforms • Working knowledge of current search engine optimization practices • Proficiency working in a mixed-platform environment with Macintosh and Windows for content creation and content publishing on Unix servers • Experience using file transfer tools, backup tools, and content management systems • Experience with web development and publishing using development and production environment servers • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with project teams • Demonstrated troubleshooting and technical problem solving abilities • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills • Excellent analytical abilities • Willingness to learn new technologies and tools Additional Desired Qualifications • 3D design and animation skills • Advanced Flash ActionScript knowledge • Familiarity with video production and post-production • Experience with common open-source file formats and open-source content creation and publishing tools • Familiarity with web audience analytics and user survey data collection methods APPLICATION DEADLINE The application submission deadline expires on Friday, October 9, 2009 by 5:00pm or when the position is filled.
