Curatorial Assistant

The Picker Art Gallery and Longyear Museum of Anthropology at Colgate University are teaching and collecting museums that engage local and global communities through innovative exhibitions, interdisciplinary research, dynamic outreach, and meaningful experiences with art and material culture.

Position Accountabilities

Primarily accountable for providing key support in collections research and documentation, curricular use of collections, exhibition and program coordination, and publication production.

Accountable for conducting research on objects in the collections, including archival research, contacting galleries and museums, and corresponding with specialists.

Accountable for accurately inputting data into collections databases, maintaining consistency across records, and producing reports.

Accountable for significant oversight and assistance in the production of museum publications, including writing and editing content.

Accountable for providing substantive support for the coordination and preparation of class visits, including corresponding with faculty.

In collaboration with the curators, accountable for conceptualizing, developing, and implementing exhibitions and programs.

Works closely with team members, accountable for making progress in digitizing collections and for developing strategies for sharing collections online, including through the development of online exhibitions and other digital projects.

Accountable for overseeing the work of undergraduate student employees or interns.

Accountable for engaging audiences through marketing and/or social media and maintaining the effective management of social media presence for both museums.

Accountable for knowing and following standards for museum and curatorial practice and Code of Ethics as outlined by the AAM.

Accountable for performing other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in related field (art history; anthropology; archaeology; museum studies; humanities) is required
Master's degree in related field (art history; anthropology; archaeology; museum studies; humanities) is strongly preferred

Professional Experience/Qualifications
Minimum one (1) year experience in a museum or other arts or cultural institution, or equivalent demonstrable experience
Familiarity working with databases and/or demonstration of understanding of database concepts; able to accurately input data, maintain consistency across records, and pull reports
Strong writing and editing skills
Experience conducting object-based research
Ability to work collegially with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students on a daily basis
Flexibility and the ability to think creatively
Knowledge of relevant computer programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Google applications)

Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of contemporary debates in the field of art/anthropology curation
Previous experience working with graphic designers, editors, scholars, and other museum professionals
Previous supervisory experience such as overseeing undergraduate student employees or interns
Experience handling museum objects/artworks. Knowledge of safe handling and movement practices.
Experience with digital and multimedia projects, such as online exhibitions and collections
Experience working with The Museum System (TMS) and/or FileMaker Pro databases
Previous involvement in producing exhibitions
Experience producing publications
Experience engaging audiences through marketing and/or social media
