SUMMARY
Art as a method of investigation and discovery is core to the educational philosophy of the Exploratorium. The Center for Art and Inquiry (CAI) leads the Exploratorium arts initiative by setting arts direction and strategy within the learning laboratory context of the Exploratorium. The Director of the Center for Art and Inquiry oversees the institutional Arts Initiative and directs the activities of the Center, including artist residencies, temporary exhibitions, commissions and special projects, and related public programs and publications. The three main areas of focus are: 1) articulating and positioning the unique role of Exploratorium arts with respect to the larger professional fields of art, science, learning, and culture; 2) directing key Exploratorium programs in the arts; 3) overseeing the institutional infrastructure for the arts, which includes leading the arts fundraising and external communication efforts. Working with the Exploratorium leadership, the Exploratorium Arts Committee, national advisors, and key external partners, the Director of the Center for Art and Inquiry is responsible for advancing the professional profile and future momentum of the arts at the Exploratorium.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provide creative leadership and ongoing strategic direction for the arts at the Exploratorium.
Direct the activities and staff of the Center for Art and Inquiry.
Articulate and represent the Exploratoriums history, philosophy and strategy in the arts, internally and externally, through meetings, conferences, publications, and special projects and programs.
Work with internal program leadership to ensure arts strategy alignment with annual priorities and the institutional R & D agenda. Work to integrate arts strategies into broader program work of the Exploratorium (Global Studios; Institute for Research and Learning; and Museum Experience).
Lead, collaborate, and contribute to, Exploratorium temporary exhibitions, research studies, workshops, conferences, and publications.
Build relationships in the local, national and international arts leadership community, by sitting on boards, advisory councils, and developing collaborative projects, in conjunction with other key staff.
Provide leadership in fundraising for the arts across the institution, working closely with Institutional Advancement and program leadership to generate arts endowment funding; foundation grants; and individual donations.
Work with communications and marketing staff to integrate Exploratoriums arts identity within broader Exploratorium communication and messaging.
Help shape the internal infrastructures required to support arts programs across the institution such as convening the quarterly arts hub meeting, identifying professional development opportunities, and providing advice and curatorial expertise to program and project leaders in collaboration with outside artists and arts organizations.
Track contacts with outside artists and serve as a point of contact for inquiries.
Advise and support project and program directors in their selection of collaborating or presenting artists.

MIMIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
MA/MFA, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
Ten (10) years progressively responsible experience in arts non-profit organization in a position of leadership and supervision
Proven track record in raising funds from individual, foundations, and government granting organizations
Ability to envision, plan, and carry out large scale projects with multiple shareholders
Outstanding organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Demonstrated experience working with staff at all levels in a highly complex, collaborative, environment; commitment and ability to promote and sustain positive workplace values and relationships
Experience in curating arts programs and exhibitions, developing arts publications, and installing public artwork
Demonstrated experience with the financial management of organizational budgets. Comfortable with systems, structures, and tools for financial and administrative analysis
Demonstrated ability to think and plan at a strategic level
Proven ability to prioritize and balance multiple demands in a fast-paced, creative environment; highly organized and detail oriented
Competence in Excel, Word, and database programs; experience with web-based applications highly desirable
