SUMMARY
The Director, Creative Media is a visionary innovator who will guide a department of 35 creative practitioners, who partner internally and externally, in the development and production of exhibits, programs, organizational content and collateral. This position reports the Managing Director, and is a member of the Senior Leadership Team, who will align creative strategy and brand stewardship with the Exploratoriums values and priorities. The ideal candidate will value diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion (DEIA) and embrace the Exploratoriums organizational aspirations to create an anti-racist culture.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Strategic Leadership & Team Management
Guide the evolution of a unified Exploratorium brand and design culture and communications solutions on behalf of our local and global audience
Work across media types and channels (Editorial, Graphic Design, Photography, Video, Online Media/Web Technology) to develop innovative strategies for design and production processes that align strategic messaging
Participate in strategic and operational planning efforts, across a complex matrixed organization, and advocate for strategic and creative communications as appropriate
Supervise five Media Studio department managers, providing direction and guidance for fiscal and personnel management, supporting a culture of inquiry and a focus on equity
Innovation and Resource Management
Direct the Media Studio as the creative communications engine of the organization, in close collaboration with Marketing and Institutional Advancement, to balance the needs of multiple Exploratorium groups to create a unified organizational narrative
Oversee the creative process for all Media Studio projects: set and meet standards for quality, productivity, and customer service for all Media Studio projects; resolve operational problems; and identify work process improvements
Collaboration and Relationship Building
Partner with Exploratorium departments to assist in the development and alignment of creative content and messaging
Ensure seamless interactions between stakeholder groups and cross-functional teams including exhibit and content project teams, Marketing/PR, and donor communications
Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors or equivalent degree in graphic design or related field or equivalent professional experience within a design field
5+ years of experience leading teams through strategy and execution in a senior management role involving the oversight of creative media staff, teams
Strong familiarity and experience with media industry trends and creative tools
Demonstrated experience crafting content strategy and organizational narratives
Working knowledge of editorial, graphics, photography, video, and web production processes
Experience in marketing and public relations strategies, and brand architecture/development and management, including familiarity with digital/social communications approaches
Demonstrated ability to think and plan at both strategic and operational levels, including business and financial aspects of design and production
Ability to prioritize and balance multiple demands and execute in a fast-paced environment
Embrace the Exploratoriums efforts in the examination and eradication of structural racism in creative content, hiring practices and workplace culture
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in the museum/cultural institution field
