The Director, Media Studio leads the development and implementation of creative communications at all levels of the Exploratorium. This includes leading the evolution of our brand and design culture, defining and developing innovative content strategies, championing the highest standards for design and production processes, and aligning strategic messaging of all our work both inside and outside the organization.

The Director, Media Studio leads groups of creative practitioners who collaborate internally and externally in the development and production of exhibits, programs, and organizational content and collateral. Working across many media types and channels, the teams reporting to the Director, Media Studio (Editorial, Graphic Design, Photography, Video, Online Media/Web Technology) invent extraordinary content and communication solutions to make an outsized impact on behalf of our three audience channels: visitors, educators, and global collaborators. Leading across the organization, the Director ensures seamless interactions between stakeholder groups including exhibit and content project teams, Marketing/PR, and donor communications.

The Director reports to the Chief Operating Officer and is a member of the Design and Development leadership team, contributing to strategic and operational planning efforts, and working collaboratively with other Directors within the Design and Development group.

Lead the Media Studio as the creative communications engine of the organization supporting the needs of multiple Exploratorium groups
Partner with Marketing and PR teams, and work with other audience stakeholders, to develop strategic, audience-specific communication strategies that support their objectives and increase the impact of their work
Oversee the creative process for all Media Studio projects: set and meet standards for quality, productivity, and customer service; resolve operational problems; identify work process improvements
Ensure all media communication and brand standards are met: initiate and lead efforts to provide tools to enable clear understanding of these standards
Ensure productive and positive working relationships within and across teams in a matrixed environment
Supervise Media Studio department managers, providing direction and support for fiscal and personnel management
Work closely with Project Directors, Project Leads, and Project Managers to staff and support effective project teams, and identify process models appropriate to specific projects
Serve on the Design and Development leadership group, participate in strategic and operational planning activities, and advocate for strategic and creative communications in other institutional forums as appropriate
Other duties as assigned

Minimum seven years experience in a senior management role involving the leadership of creative media staff and projects
Demonstrated experience crafting content strategy and organizational narratives
Working knowledge of editorial, graphics, photography, video, and web production processes
Experience in marketing and public relations strategies, and brand architecture/development and management, including familiarity with digital/social communications approaches
Strong understanding and experience of media industry trends and creative tools
Demonstrated ability to think and plan at both strategic and operational levels, including business and financial aspects of design and production
Demonstrated ability to prioritize and balance multiple demands and execute on decisions in a fast-paced environment
Experience working with staff at all levels in a highly complex and collaborative organization; commitment and ability to promote and sustain positive workplace values and relationships
Outstanding organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
