On-Call Senior Writer/Editor

SUMMARY

Senior Writer/Editors (Technical) are responsible for translating complex technical exhibit specs into accurate, concise, and audience-appropriate language. They have a deep understanding of technical communication, including the creation of technical exhibit manuals, as well as general editorial expertise. They collaborate with exhibit and new media developers, engineers, the Editorial Director, and graphic designers. The Senior Writer/Editor (Technical) position has an emphasis on self-direction and independent writing and editing of high-quality technical exhibit manuals and other technical content.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Writing and editing: Write and edit technical exhibit manuals and other technical pieces that contain consistent treatment of specs and other technical details.
Collaboration: Cooperatively and proactively work with engineers, exhibit development staff, and others to create technical documents with minimum supervision.
Iteration: Incorporate feedback and edits from others and rewrite copy as needed.
Flexibility: Adapt to project constraints with proactive solutions.
Judgement: Make timely technical writing and editorial decisions; show strong creative discernment and good discipline in editing ideas.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

BA/BS degree or higher with a certification in technical writing, or equivalent experience.
Minimum five years professional technical writing experience including the creation of manuals and editorial style guides.
Demonstrated excellence in writing, editing, research, and project management.
A professional portfolio of published pieces and/or museum credits.
A tactful, cooperative attitude when editing, and willingness to be edited by others.
Demonstrated dedication to accuracy and detail; willing to work through multiple revisions of projects.
Talent for collaboration and effective teamwork, and demonstrated ability to work with people at all levels of an organization.
Ability to meet tight deadlines and juggle multiple projects with minimal supervision.
Ability to build work estimates for projects and complete work within budgeted hours.
